Stream of Consciousness

I'm sitting here, at the library, at 10:30 on a Wednesday night.
You're probably thinking, good for you! You're studying-well I'm obviously not right?

I looked down at my hand where a stamp lies. BYU it says. In red. (ironic?) I just pounded my head on my desk thinking:
I WILL NEVER GET OUT OF HERE.
I have been at this glorious University for four years. FOUR. I'm ten days away from what should be a graduation because, well, I've been here for four years. But I'm not graduating.
True to senior form however, I have a nasty case of senioritis. Spell check says that's not a word, doctors would probably agree as well. In my expertise, however, I can tell you that it does exist.

Today my dance trainer asked if I had been tested to see if I was crazy. This was after I told him about my dream that while on stage, my floor opened up into a dark abyss with lava spouting and my fellow dancers were being sucked under one by one. I was the only one left standing and the audience LOVED the dance.
That makes me think.
One. I probably really am crazy and should go get checked.
Two. Why did the audience love this show I was involved in? PEOPLE WERE DYING.
And then I remembered that human beings for some silly reason love to watch people die. They even call it entertainment.
This made me think back on one Saturday during my freshman year, when I was sick, I sat and watched a whole season of 24. I watched people get murdered time after time and I was entertained.
Why is violence tolerated? Why do we watch this and call it "fun"? Where is the humor in watching a man slip on a banana peel and get hurt? I realize this is extreme...but still.

I was reading on wikipedia tonight about these authors and artists that I have to write a paper on. I'm trying to look at these paintings and decipher their hidden meanings. AND I AM SO BORED. Then I got worried that I didn't like studying and that made me a bad student and why wasn't I interested in learning all of the sudden? ahem...senioritis. Then I turned to Tanner (who was reading boring stuff for Biology) and I said, "I am so glad I'm not majoring in Humanities". Because let me tell you something. I love learning about things I'm interested in. But then is that stretching me and causing me to grow? I could easily sit down and read a 25 page research article about parenting and food and families. So I'm obviously in the right major. Even if I won't get out of here for two more years. Dance is another factor in the graduation delay and apparently all my friends are going to die anyway during the show tomorrow so is it even worth it?

So here's some advice-do things you love to do and major in something you're passionate in. You were given different talents and abilities and I think, even interests so that you could bless the world and those you meet.

And yes, I'm crazy.

salsa and other

I wanted to share this killer recipe for homemade salsa...
I can take no credit for this however. The recipe comes from the lovely woman I nannied for last summer. She made this one time and I about died. I love most salsas enough to drink them but this one is just AMAZING. It's so easy too!

In a blender combine:
one can italian stewed tomatoes
two cans mexican stewed tomatoes
one white onion
one bunch of cilantro (I cut off the stems)
one jalapeno
I usually do the ingredients in stages because my blender isn't big enough to do it all at once.

It is seriously that easy and make enough to feed a large party. Like, I usually have to give some away to my neighbors-and they don't complain. It has a consistency similar to Los Hermano's which I love but I'm sure you can make it chunkier by hand dicing everything. Try it! :)

Also, wedding plans are coming along nicely. I have my last dress fitting next week, a bridal shower coming up followed by engagements that weekend. We bought our favors today and things just keep getting crossed off our list. It's quite nice. I like my smaller list.
We have also recently discovered that we will be very poor after we wed. It will also be near impossible for us to work this summer. We have the month of May off after school then leave for Europe the month of June, married a week after we get home in July and then traveling for the rest of the month. So if you find anyone who wants to hire someone for the month of May...please let me know?

Character

"Faith and character are intimately related. Faith in the power of obedience to the commandments of God will forge strength of character available to you in times of urgent need. Such character is not developed in moments of great challenge or temptation. That is when it is intended to be used. Your exercise of faith in true principles builds character; fortified character expands your capacity to exercise more faith. As a result, your capacity and confidence to conquer the trials of life is enhanced. The more your character is fortified, the more enabled you are to benefit from exercising the power of faith. You will discover how faith and character interact to strengthen one another. Character is woven patiently from threads of applied principle, doctrine, and obedience."

Today I decided that I would have faith. I decided this morning that I was going to make this day great. I am going to soak up each moment I have and enjoy it.

"We become what we want to be by consistently being what we want to become each day. Righteous character is a precious manifestation of what you are becoming. Righteous character is more valuable than any material object you own, any knowledge you have gained through study, or any goals you have attained no matter how well lauded by mankind. In the next life your righteous character will be evaluated to assess how well you used the privilege of mortality."

I'm trying my faith today. I'm going to act on the impressions and feel hope in trusting God.

"Thus, every time you try your faith—that is, act in worthiness on an impression—you will receive the confirming evidence of the Spirit. As you walk to the boundary of your understanding into the twilight of uncertainty, exercising faith, you will be led to find solutions you would not obtain otherwise. With even your strongest faith, God will not always reward you immediately according to your desires. Rather, God will respond with what in His eternal plan is best for you, when it will yield the greatest advantage. Be thankful that sometimes God lets you struggle for a long time before that answer comes. That causes your faith to increase and your character to grow."

Reminder

I was walking home from school yesterday and was completely overwhelmed with the majesty of the mountains. They were breathtaking.

Then it got dark and I looked at the stars. There is evidence of a God all around us.

Just remember that.

Tomorrow

Tomorrow I will be in Reno, Nevada. Then California.

CALIFORNIA for 10 days.

The International Folk Dance Ensemble (the dance group at BYU I am so blessed to be a part of) is leaving for their mid-semester tour tomorrow. 5 a.m. I might add. It will be lovely. I am excited to leave this frigid place called Provo and escape for a bit. It will be the first spring break in four year for me. Lame BYU! It's a miracle people don't go mad at this University.

That's all. Just wanted you to know that I'm leaving for a slightly warmer climate.

Breathing

I learned a really cool trick in preschool. It's called breathing.

We sit there, after doing the "Wiggle, wiggle" dance and bring our hands up as we breath in, then down as we exhale. We do this three times. The fourth time, we do it silently. I can not tell you how much this calms me down.

Sometimes I get a little bit stressed. And even though being engaged is quite fantastic and I'm still kinda in la la land, planning a wedding is a tad bit stressful. Really, who decided that we had to mail invitations, pick colors or a "theme", feed everyone, and spend hundreds of dollars on a cake. LAME-O. After they sat down and commercialized love on Valentine's day, did they commercialize the wedding? Truth be told, I already have these silly things checked off my to-do list. And yes, it is going to be really pretty. And you can all come. It's in May. And yes, Brooke dear, I will give you the story and other fantastic tidbits soon.

BUT...It's still stressful. So I breathe.

It has been helping. Meditating helps too. But I'm really really happy. And Tanner is really really wonderful. But breathing makes things really really better.
